Cowiche creek
Scott Mclean
My brother and I spent a lot of time around the nearest water.
Cowiche creek was only a guarter mile away so we waded, swam, and fished a long length of it. We also used the canal on Cowiche Mountain. There was a long stretch with no siphon so we would swim or float it.
Our floating was done on truck inner tubes which also were our sleds in winter. One of the departments Dad ran with H and H was shipping which allowed him to get some used tubes.
We liked catching watersnakes at the creek. We had a long stretch of the creek where we had permission to fish without much competition.
In those days, the night before fishing season opened was like Christmas eve. We got all our gear ready and had a hard time sleeping.
Our bikes were our transportation then. They were nothing fancy and made up mostly of mismatched parts. When we got enough money from sprinklers and other work we splurged and bought 10 speeds from Giant-T. Remember that place?
We soon found out that the new bikes were not as jump friendly as our old ones. I hit the front bar so hard it’s a wonder I was able to have kids!
The canal on Cowiche Mountain also provided a route to further adventure. You could take it all the way to Elon Gilbert’s land and into upper Cowiche Canyon. That way you could take dirt bikes up without getting pulled over for riding on the road.
Steve never got into dirt bikes or motorcycles in general like I did. Probably smart.
More later.
