Cascades Spots
Scott Mclean
I was looking at the top of Rainier peaking up out my hospital room window these last three days and it reminded me of days gone by.
Tipsoo was always a stop when going over Chinook and when I was younger you could still see the trout placed there by WSU. They say they were winter killed but I heard reports of preppy looking dogs with nets dressed in purple. Just a rumor because those fish could probably kick some doggy butt.
There were attractions that still exist like box canyon and the glacier outlooks. Paradise is still there but sadly the ice caves are long gone. They were beautiful and I feel lucky to have been inside them and enjoyed their beauty.
The other main visitor center went by Sunrise or Yakima. With the political imbalance now it will probably be called Inslee. Won’t have to worry about fertilizer for the wildflowers then. You now have to pay for a reservation ahead of time to visit these areas.
Is the stuffed Cougar still at Sunrise? No WSU vs UW jokes this time.
We saw an example of the overcrowding in October. From the east side restroom at the summit through Tipsoo there were easily 200 cars parked in every possible spot. You’d have a hard time taking a group of Cubs around the Naches Peak Loop now. It makes you look back on the slower, simpler days with fondness. But if you happen to see some dogs with nets wearing masks… just saying!
Bye now
